Carn Wheelers on the National stage
Carn Wheelers were out in force at the Mc Nally swords promotion of the 2015 National Cyclocross Championships in the Ward River Valley Park last Sunday 11th Jan. The club was well represented in almost all categories on the day.
The forecast was miserable in the days leading up to the national event, with many social media updates from the organisers bracing racers for a muddy and tough affair!
Seeing is believing & conditions deteriorated for riders as the day went on; it was undoubtedly the most demanding course of year.
Emma Elder was first to the start line representing Carn wheelers on Nationals day; the atmosphere around the course was building nicely. Emma battled to the end giving it her all and finished strongly in her age group. Emma says;” it was the toughest race I’ve ever done, really physical with all the running and bike carrying, but I really enjoyed the experience of a national course”. Well done Emma!
The second race of the day saw Mairead Mc Gurk take to the line as one of only 3 Ulster women making the journey to the North Dublin venue. The pace was high throughout the race with a strong group of fierce female competitors; Mairead finished 6th women on the day, an achievement that she knows will advance her further next season.
Barry Russell and Shane Elder were next to the start line in the Masters Race just minutes after the women; in what was to be the most hotly contested race of the day. Unfortunately Barry was unable to finish his race due to illness. Shane put in a massive effort and finished well in the overall placing.
The main event of the day was the Elite men’s race; representing Carn wheelers was Johnny Taylor, Joseph McCrory and Nigel Gibson – all 3 men where in good form following the Ulster championships pre Christmas where they had picked up team prize. Course conditions had deteriorated for the Elite race making it even more difficult for the three competitors. In the end it was Taylor who was first Carn man over the line in an impressive 14th place overall. Joseph and Nigel fought hard for 27th and 28thplace respectively.
Congratulations to all concerned in running the event. A special congratulation goes out to all Carn wheelers who competed and represented the club superbly.
All the Carn Wheelers competitors wish to thank the massive support crew who came to swords and managed the power washing, did pit crew, supported and cheered on all the riders. You were immense!
A great day’s craic was had by all in what was a fitting end to a fantastic Cyclocross season for Carn Wheelers.
Here’s a glimpse of our National Day out J
Thanks,
Mairead
