CX Round 3

Sunday the 19th of October saw round 3 of the Ulster Cyclocross season take place in Windmill Park Dungannon hosted by Island Wheelers.

As usual Carn wheelers were well represented with a big turn out of riders in all categories.  

First race of the day was the under 6 race with Riley Gibson competing in his first cyclocross race and doing a fine job to come in well in the thick of things. 

The next rider for carn wheelers was Ryan Skelly taking part in the under 12 race Ryan had a great run this week finishing 5th in a big field of under 12 boys .

The under 14 riders were next to the line with Niall Skelly in the boys race and Sarah Elder in the girls race both riders have been in good form lately and their efforts were well rewarded once again with Niall taking a fine 3rd place finish in the boys and Sarah taking 2nd place in the girls race .

It was then time for the under 16 race and Emma Elder and Niamh Skelly going in the 
girls race with Emma taking a strong 2nd place with Niamh hot on her heels in 3rd .All in all it was another successful day for our youth riders as the continue to impress with some determined and skilful riding in very changeable conditions keep up the good work kids.  

In the mountain bike support race Darren Mulholland and Sean Bradley were representing the Carn crew with Sean riding in this adult class due to a rule change despite being u16 however this doesn't seem to deter Sean as he is continually pushing the strong men and on Sunday probably would have won but for a crash on the last lap however he picked himself up and finished in 2nd place just 5secs of first place a win is surely just around the corner for the impressive young talent Darren also had a really strong race today and rode with great determination to come home in the top end of a quality field of riders .  

It was then the turn of the cyclocross B racers and the women to to take on what was a challenging course made even more difficult with a downpour before and during their race in the men's race Nigel Gibson Carl McWilliams and Gareth Skelly were competing and all 3 men did a great job in very tricky conditions with all 3 men finishing in strong positions in the top half of a field of over 50 riders .  

Mairead McGurk was racing in the women race and was hoping for a bit of the luck that had deserted her in the previous race at lady Dixon park where punctures robbed her of any chance of a competive race ,despite the rain and increasingly difficult conditions Mairead had a superb race were she was battling for a top 3 position and just missed by the narrowest of margins well done Mairead . 

Time now for the A race and although the rain had now stopped conditions were very tough with the course getting very slippery and the muddy sections really draggy making for a very tough race there was to be a degree of bad luck for some of the carn men with Ryan Walsh and Marc 
Heaney having reliability problems bringing their race to an early end bad luck lads as the race unnfolded and all riders pursued their own battles within the race it was plain to see that most of our riders were getting stronger as the weeks go by  with finishing positions steadily improving in what is proving to be a really fiercely competitive racing enviroment this season with no easy races first Carn Wheeler home this week was Johnny Taylor followed closely by Joe McCrory and Barry Russell,  next Carn man in was Martin Bradley with Shane Elder rounding out the finishers for the Carn Wheelers on the day.  

A big thanks must go to Island Wheelers who as always proved to be the perfect host with the superb organisation and fluent running of another top event and not forgetting the excellent spread of food laid on for riders and supporters . 

Again well done to all who represented the Carn Wheelers on Sunday,  you did the club proud as always with your efforts and sportsmanship.
