Heaney Belgian Project Ras Donegal
Carn Wheelers Marc Heaney was racing in the Rás Dhu Na nGall last weekend.
Marc was selected to ride in the colours of The Belgian Project race team. This is a talent development program founded by Dany Blondeel a Belgian national.
The first stage of the race took place in very windy conditions on the Friday evening with Marc finishing in 4th place. Saturday morning the winds hadn't eased any and the riders faced a gruelling 2mile hill climb up the back of Glengesh, Marc finished strongly in 4th place to move to 3rd in the GC, being one of only 12 of the 174 starters to post a time under 10 minutes. The riders then had a short rest before the 60 mile stage in the afternoon, with the winds still reeking havoc the riders had their work cut out, Danish rider Mickel Honore won the stage with a solo move after two miles, Marc finished 8th and retained his 3rd on GC. Sunday saw the winds ease and the sun make an appearance for the final stage which finished at the summit of Glengesh mountain, the peloton stayed together until two riders broke away and opened up a 2min+ gap on the chasing group, This was pulled back to 20sec before the last climb with the leader Derek Cunningham crossing the line to take the stage. Marc finished the stage in 6th and finished the race in 4th overall.
Congratulations to Marc on his Belgian Project Team Selection and overall results for the weekends racing in Donegal.
