Marc Heaney does well at Anaclone, Johnny too
21 Feb 2015
On Saturday two Carn Wheelers, Johnny Taylor & Marc Heaney travelled to Banbridge for the 1st road race on the 2015 calendar Tha Travers Annaclone GP. Approx 180 riders from A1/2/3, Juniors &A4 gathered for this annual season opener.
For Marc this was his first taste of adult road racing having previously raced at youth U16, he has recently moved into the Junior ranks for this season and will be riding in the A3 category. Johnny a seasoned racer is starting his 2015 season in his familiar A1 category. The race was a handicap race with the A3's, a full field of 80ish riders heading off with a 3min advantage to the much smaller chasing A1/2 group. The A4 race started after the A1's departed. A six lap race the A1's were on a mission with a super fast start talking 45secs out of the A3 pack by the end of lap one, but that gap stayed pretty constant over the next two laps with the front A3 group working well, on the third lap 3 riders broke away from the front of the race and opened up a 40 sec advantage on the chasing A3 bunch who were being chased by a hard working A1/2 group, at the end of the 5th lap the A4 race finished leaving the scene set for a thrilling climax to the main race. The breakaway was split on the last lap with the winner taking victory by 2+ mins, the A1/2 group just managed to tag onto the A3 group within the last 500m. With 1st& 2nd places decided there was a bunch sprint for the remaining positions, Marc had his strategy well sorted and crossed the line to take 5th place overall, and his first points of the season, Johnny who was in the chasing bunch moved up through the pack in the last dash to the line to finish in the top 25. A great result for both riders on what was a hard opening race in dry but bitterly cold windy conditions. Now with their season opened they can look forward to the next start line.
